Outline of Kounoike Shinden Kaisho
Shinden, where both paddy field and dry cultivated field were developed after the survey by the Edo shogunate and the local daimyo domains in tne eary Edo period, are found in many places in Japan.
In the middle of Edo period (1705-7), the Lake Shinga-ike beside the Neya River in the central Kawachi plain of Osaka was reclaimed and exploited as shinden by Zen'emon Munetoshi and his son Zenjiro of Konoike family, one of the great merchants. Konoike Shinden Kaisho was established in 1707 as the central facility for the management of farming and tenants, and had been used until 1950. Thereafter several traditional architectures and garden have been remained in the site of 10,662 square meters with the surrounding moat.
Kaisho, defferent from common residence, is characterized by its honya (main house) with magnificent doma (earthen floor) and high beams, spacious and simple zashiki (formal room for guests and ceremonies), and kuras (warehouses) surrounding the courtyard, which was conceived in the management of Shinden.
The site of this kaisho was designated as a national historic place in 1976, and honya, kura attached to honya, and three kuras for documents, rice, and tools were designated as national important cultural assets by Protection Law for Cultural Assets in 1980. After the dismantlement and repairs of 10 years from 1985, kaisho has been opend to public.
